Standing Together for Awareness: Claris Health and HIV/AIDS Awareness Month

This December, Claris Health recognizes HIV/AIDS Awareness Month by raising awareness, reducing stigma and providing free confidential STD testing in Los Angeles. Learn how prevention and education save lives.

Every December, we pause to reflect on the progress made, the work still ahead in the fight against HIV and AIDS. World AIDS Day, observed on December 1st, reminds us that awareness saves lives, education empowers communities, and compassion breaks down stigma.

At Claris Health, we believe that caring for others means addressing the whole person. Body, mind and spirit. This month, we want to highlight our commitment to providing judgment-free, confidential, and accessible sexual health care for all.

Why Awareness Still Matters

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV today and about 1 in 8 don’t know they have it. That means millions are missing out on treatment, protection, and peace of mind.

In Los Angeles County, HIV continues to impact communities of color, young adults and women at increasing rates. While medical advances have turned HIV into a manageable condition for many, early detection remains key. Testing saves lives and destigmatizing testing means more people feel safe to take that step.

At Claris, we meet people where they are without shame or judgment. We offer education, prevention and care. Because knowing your status isn’t just about protecting yourself; it’s about protecting the people you love.

Breaking the Stigma

At Claris, we understand that fear and stigma often prevent people from seeking care. That’s why our clinic environment is designed to be safe, inclusive and nonjudgmental.

No matter your story, background or circumstance… you deserve care. Our staff members are trained to provide compassionate guidance and help you understand your next steps, whether it’s treatment, prevention or counseling support.

We believe that health care should never be about shame. It should be about empowerment.

Education = Prevention

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools in fighting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Claris Health is proud to serve schools, universities, and community organizations across Los Angeles through our Reality Check Program, which provides sexual and relational health education to thousands of students each year.

These presentations equip young people with accurate information about sexual health, healthy relationships, and decision-making. By addressing myths, questions, and social pressures, we’re not only preventing disease. We’re building confidence and encouraging communication.

A Legacy of Compassionate Care

Since opening its doors almost 50 years ago, Claris Health has been more than a clinic.  It’s been a place of refuge and belonging. From pregnancy testing and prenatal care to mental health counseling and family support, every service is rooted in one mission: to provide holistic, judgment-free care that honors the dignity of each person.

Our commitment to sexual health care, including HIV testing and prevention education, reflects that same belief. Health isn’t just physical, it’s emotional too.

That’s why we offer not only testing but also counseling, referrals and ongoing support for individuals navigating new diagnoses or life changes. You are never alone in your journey.

Light That Lasts: Hope in Every Step

As December also marks the season of giving and reflection, we remember that awareness and compassion go hand in hand. For every person who takes the step to get tested, another life is potentially saved. For every volunteer or donor who gives, another door of hope opens.

At Claris Health, we see this light every day in the courage of our clients, the kindness of our staff, and the generosity of our community. The light we share through care, education, and support is a Light That Lasts — one that continues to brighten lives across Los Angeles.

If you’ve never been tested or if it’s been a while since your last screening, let this be your reminder: your health matters, your story matters, and taking care of yourself is an act of love — for you and those around you.
