Motherhood: Then & Now – Katya’s Story

Every generation of motherhood carries its own challenges, but the need for support, strength, and connection remains the same. As part of our Motherhood: Then & Now series, Katya’s story reflects the courage it takes to step into motherhood against the odds.

When Katya first came to Claris in 2006 as a client, she was just 18 years old, facing an uncertain future and navigating pregnancy on her own. The questions were constant: Will I be able to do this? How will I provide? What will life look like for my child?

And yet, even in the midst of uncertainty, she chose motherhood.

With the support of Claris and her community, Katya began a journey that would shape the rest of her life. What once felt overwhelming became a story of resilience, growth, and deep love.

She remembers the fears about her baby’s health, about raising a child alone, about whether she would know what to do. But alongside those fears came something unexpected: strength.

“Mothers just instinctively know how to keep going,” she says.

Over time, that strength made a way for Katya to experience joy. Watching her daughter grow, every milestone, every word, every smile became the greatest gift. Motherhood didn’t just change her life, it transformed it.

Katya’s advice to moms today centers on one word: connection.

Connection with other moms. Connection with your child. Connection that reminds you that you’re not alone.

She also speaks candidly about something many women in her generation didn’t have: accessible mental health support. Today’s resources of support groups, online communities, and increased awareness, are a gift she wishes had been available during her early years as a mom.

Her story is a powerful reflection of what Claris strives to provide every day: not just services, but community, encouragement, and hope.

“When I was pregnant at 18, there was so much uncertainty… but I found support. Mothers just instinctively know how to keep going… My daughter changed the trajectory of my life.”

Katya’s journey is a reminder that when a mom is supported, everything can change.
