August Parenting Newsletter

This August, the Parenting Team at Claris Health wants to encourage you as families prepare for a new school year.

Back-to-school season often brings excitement, fresh opportunities, new beginnings and it can also bring stress, uncertainty, plus big emotions. New teachers, changing routines, school supplies, transportation, childcare, and shifting schedules can feel overwhelming for both parents and children.

Whether you’re parenting full-time, co-parenting, or working toward reunification, you have an important role in helping your child navigate this transition. The love, encouragement, and consistency you provide can make a lasting difference.

This month, our classes and workshops are focused on helping families create healthy routines, support emotional well-being, and build confidence as children head back to school. Be sure to check out our August calendar for classes, resources, and opportunities to stay connected.

Our focus this month is helping children feel safe through change—because when children know they have caring adults supporting them, they are better equipped to face new challenges with confidence.

Parenting Tip of the Month:

Help Your Child Feel Safe Through Change

Create simple routines together.

Whether your child is returning to school for the first time or starting a new grade, predictable routines can help reduce anxiety. Consistent bedtimes, morning routines, and after-school check-ins help children know what to expect.

Talk about the transition.

Ask open-ended questions like, “What are you looking forward to?” or “Is there anything you’re nervous about?” Listening without immediately trying to fix the problem helps children feel heard and understood.

Support your child in the ways you can.

Every family’s situation is different, but every parent can play an important role.

  • If your child lives with you, create opportunities to talk about their day, celebrate their successes, and establish routines that help them thrive.
  • If you’re co-parenting or sharing custody, keeping communication respectful and maintaining consistent expectations across homes can help children feel secure during transitions.
  • If you’re currently separated from your child or working toward reunification, you can still encourage their education by sending a note of encouragement, asking about school when you’re able to connect, celebrating their accomplishments, or continuing to work on your own personal growth. The healthy choices you’re making today are helping build a stronger future relationship.

Children learn from direct experiences with you and through observing you. When you approach change with flexibility, patience, and hope, you teach your child that new beginnings can be opportunities for growth.

Remember: A successful school year isn’t measured by perfect attendance, perfect grades, or perfect parenting. It’s built through encouragement, consistency, and knowing there are caring adults cheering children on every step of the way. No matter your family’s circumstances, your love and support matter more than you may realize.

With you every step of the way,

The Claris Health Parenting Team
