50 Years of Clarity & Care
An Open Letter from Claris Health CEO, Talitha Phillips
August 2026
Fifty years ago, Claris Health began with a simple conviction: people facing some of life’s most personal and complicated circumstances deserve compassion, dignity, and care.
A lot has changed since 1976. Healthcare has changed, Los Angeles has changed, and the national conversation surrounding pregnancy and reproductive health has become increasingly complex and, at times, deeply divided.
Claris has changed, too. What began as a small organization serving women facing unintended pregnancies is now a licensed primary care clinic serving thousands throughout Los Angeles and beyond. Our care extends across pregnancy, sexual health, mental health, parenting support, and education.
But after 50 years, something fundamental has not changed:
We believe every person who walks through our doors deserves to be heard, respected, informed, and cared for.
That belief is at the heart of what we call The Claris Way.
People before politics.
Pregnancy and reproductive health exist within one of the most polarized conversations in our country. But when someone walks into Claris, we don’t see a political issue standing in front of us.
We see a person.
A person with a story. A person who may be overwhelmed, hopeful, afraid, excited, uncertain, or several of those at once, and whose circumstances cannot be captured by a political label or reduced to a debate. For 50 years, our responsibility has been to care for that person.
Claris does not exist to tell anyone what political position to hold, and we don’t believe an exam room should become another place where people feel pressured to choose a side.
Instead, we listen, ask questions, and provide excellent medical care and accurate information, along with the space and support people need to make informed decisions about their health and their future.
Claris means clarity.
Our name has always reflected something we believe people deserve: clarity. Clarity means being transparent about who we are and the care we provide.
Claris Health is a nonprofit healthcare provider, licensed by the State of California as a Primary Care Clinic and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Our medical care is provided by licensed clinicians and overseen by our Medical Director, an OB/GYN. Services include pregnancy testing and ultrasound imaging, prenatal and well-woman care, STD/STI testing and treatment, mental health services, parenting programs, and education.
We do not perform abortions at Claris Health.
We do, however, believe that someone facing a pregnancy decision deserves the opportunity to ask questions, receive accurate information, explore their pregnancy options, and understand what those options mean for their individual circumstances.
Being clear about what we do and what we do not do matters to us, as does creating a place where people can ask difficult questions without fear of judgment.
Patients lead. We come alongside.
The Claris Way is patient-led, because we begin by listening rather than assuming we know what someone needs. Fully informed, because people deserve accurate information and the opportunity to understand their options. Family-centered, because the health and well-being of individuals affect—and are affected by—the people around them. And integrated, because a pregnancy or sexual-health decision rarely exists in isolation.
Health is connected to relationships, mental health, family, housing, finances, and hopes for the future. Our goal has never been to provide a single service and send someone on their way. Caring for the whole person can mean an appointment, counseling, helping a parent find resources, or simply a safe place to talk through something difficult. And sometimes it means still showing up months or even years after that first appointment.
Fifty years has taught us the power of showing up.
When I think about Claris’ 50-year history, I don’t primarily think about buildings, programs, statistics, or milestones.
I think about people.
I think about the woman who arrived frightened and left feeling that she could finally breathe. The young person who needed healthcare but was afraid of being judged. The family that came back months later because they remembered how they had been treated the first time.
I think about the physicians, nurses, counselors, educators, staff members, volunteers, donors, and community partners who believed that caring for someone well can change the trajectory of a life.
Those stories have shaped Claris for five decades. They have taught us that people rarely need someone shouting at them from one side of an issue or the other. They need people willing to come alongside them.
Our next 50 years.
I’m grateful for where we’ve been, and even more excited about where we are going.
The need for accessible, compassionate, whole-person healthcare in Los Angeles remains significant. We want to bring care into the communities where barriers are greatest, and create places where medical care, mental health support, and practical resources work together. We will continue to grow, to learn, to listen, and to be transparent about who we are.
There will always be political debates surrounding pregnancy and reproductive health. Laws will change. Technology will change. Public opinion will change.
Our calling is much simpler.
Care for the person in front of us.
Give them excellent care.
Tell them the truth.
Listen to their story.
Help them understand their options.
Treat them with dignity.
And make sure they know they don’t have to navigate what comes next alone.
For 50 years, that has been the heart of Claris Health. As we look toward the next 50, it will continue to be.
Claris means clarity.
And we consider it an extraordinary privilege to provide clarity and care, every step of the way.
For Bright Futures,
Talitha Phillips

Looking Back: Our 2022 Open Letter
In July 2022, following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, we published an open letter addressing the increasingly polarized national conversation surrounding pregnancy and reproductive health and explaining Claris Health’s approach to care.
That letter represents an important moment in our history, and we have chosen to preserve it in its original form.
